This
is my prehistoric tank.
It has a Dennerle substrate heating cable.
The substrate is a mix of silver sand, laterite, fine gravel, and medium
gravel. To give a natural looking substrate that is good for plant growth.
It is filtered by a biolife 55 wet/dry filter.
I only use re-mineralised R.O. water for this tank, not only does it
allow me to set the pH and alkalinity for the inhabitants, it also has
less than 5% of the pollution found in tap water. This also helps the
plants, as well as reducing the amount of maintenance needed.
It is lit by a LifeGlo (high intensity white light) and a Trocal plant
light. They are set on separate timers to give a long dawn, then full
light for 8 hours, then a 2 hour dusk. This is when the fish are most
active, as they prefer the dimmer light.
I also make good use of plant root tablets and liquid plant foods, also
essential for the plant growth. If the plants grow well they also use
up a lot of the waste from the aquarium water.
There is a pair of P. dalhezi, and a pair of reed fish (hence prehistoric).
Also a pair of Nigerian red Kribensis. There is also a variety of catfish,
including H. thoracatum, the bubble nest catfish, some Corydoras sp.
and a couple of Sturisoma sp. |
